The world lost a great visionary and teacher this week, but the brilliant contributions of Marshall Rosenberg (1934-2015) will continue to make the world a brighter place through the movement he originated: Nonviolent Communication (NVC).

Many of the writers, teachers, parenting coaches, parents, and other leaders whom I admire the most have studied NVC philosophy. Rosenberg’s ideas have influenced much of my writing as well.

I frequently recite one of his most famous quotes: “Violence is a tragic expression of unmet needs.” On countless occasions, that perspective has spared me from the life-draining effects of accusation, blame, and condemnation, allowing me to experience compassion instead.
