We’ve Come a Long Way!
Presumably you wouldn’t be reading The Daily Groove if you weren’t somehow “off the beaten path” of parenting. But do you remember how you got there?
My path has always been assuredly alternative because, well, I’m just weird. But I remember precisely the day when my wheels steered completely off the pre-paved parenting road: It was a mere two months into parenthood, when my wife and I were advised by our holistic pediatrician to read a little book called The Continuum Concept.
Reading TCC changed my thinking so dramatically that I ended up seeking out the author, Jean Liedloff, and partnering with her to bring the message of her book to the internet. That was back in 1998, when authors having websites was still a new thing. Working with Jean and the global online community of her readers eventually led to me becoming a parenting coach and starting The Daily Groove.
When Jean passed away five years ago, she left me in charge of her “intellectual property,” much of which was buried in an assortment of disorganized cardboard file boxes. Fortunately, I recovered those boxes before they were thrown away, but I’ve just kept them in storage... until last week.
I’ve begun working with Geralyn Gendreau, Jean’s authorized biographer, to sift through the boxes in search of hidden treasures. And so far we’ve found quite a lot — even some unpublished articles! We’ve also found written accounts of previously unknown details of Jean’s life and adventures, and these will add to the already fantastic life story I’ve been enjoying in Geralyn’s early drafts of the biography.
Jean’s book, first published in 1975, inspired the Attachment Parenting movement, but her intention was to write a treatise on human nature, not a parenting manual. Later she wrote a few articles on how the continuum concept applies to parenting. If you aren’t familiar with the book, I highly recommend reading her interview for Touch the Future. Or better yet, get a copy of the book for yourself and find out why so many people count it among their favorites.
